Using High-Performance Ceramics to Increase Service Life

Caldera Engineering Ceramic & Metals Expertise

Caldera offers its customers a wide range of solutions that combine the best of materials, including high-performance ceramics. Customers in many industries have come to rely on high performance ceramics to extend the service life of operating equipment. Caldera combines precision engineering with advanced ceramic materials to deliver parts and components that will operate for longer periods before requiring maintenance, refurbishment, or replacement.

High-Performance Ceramics for Severe Service Needs

In the Mineral Processing Industry, high performance ceramics are used in control valve trim, slurry letdown choke tubes and blast tubes, vent blast spools, flash vessel impingement blocks, oxygen injection tubes, and in-line chokes for slurry pipelines among other applications.

Caldera typically integrates three types of silicon carbide ceramic into its products. Each material is roughly an order of magnitude more erosion resistant than the material that follows it.

  1. Sintered Silicon Carbide (SSiC)
  2. Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide (RBSiC)
  3. Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbide (NBSiC)

The Best Ceramics For The Most Erosive Conditions

SSiC is used in industry’s most erosive applications, such as the trim for valves in flashing and erosive services (plugs and seats), in some in-line chokes (ceramic orifices), and other critical components for severe service applications. RBSiC is used in tubes, pipes, and impingement blocks. NBSiC is used in pipe and impingement blocks. These ceramic products are also suited for various applications in food processing, oil & gas, and other operating environments where equipment is subjected to severe erosion.

Caldera can offer other types of ceramics including:

  • Toughened Zirconia
  • Silicon Nitride
  • Tungsten Carbide

Quality-Designed, Certified and Tested Ceramics for Exceptional Performance

Caldera collaborates regularly with its ceramic suppliers on material characteristics, manufacturing methods, part design and inspection. All of Caldera’s engineered ceramics are tested and quality-certified. Each piece is meticulously inspected for cracks, chips, porosity, and other defects. Caldera makes an extra effort to ensure that our highly engineered products are fit for service and ready to install at customer sites.
